General Oil Company president says his firm never dumped
Tim Westerdale, president and CEO of General Oil, said the company hasn't owned the property since 2004, and that the environmentally-unfriendly practice was done years ago by a company that no longer exists. “When we bought the place, we thought the remediation had been done properly, and, obviously, it hadn't,” Westerdale said. Captain of Probo Koala ordered to remain silent on toxic cargo
Captain Sergey Chertov stated that he was not aware exactly what would happen to the toxic waste and that he was simply following instructions. His clients sent him several emails in which they instructed him to keep silent about the presence of caustic soda in the chemical waste aboard the Probo Koala. Caustic soda is used to remove the sulphur from low-grade used oil to turn it into cheap petrol. WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold three public hearings in June on proposals cutting mercury emissions in half and significantly reducing other toxic air pollutants from industrial and institutional boilers, process heaters and solid waste incinerators The agency will also take comment at the hearings on a proposal to identify which non-hazardous secondary materials would be considered solid waste and which would be considered fuel. Car rental holding company Enterprise Holdings rolls out 20/20 Vision Program.
Enterprise Holdings, which is the parent company of Alamo Rent A Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental, is rolling out a sustainability initiative company-wide to reduce both energy use and energy costs by 20 percent over the next five years. Safety-Kleen cleans up oil after races helping in the Gulf
Each year, Safety Kleen recycles more than 200,000 gallons of oil from racing events. But the company is also involved in the Gulf cleanup. "We're based right now in Biloxi Mississippi awaiting anything that comes ashore," said Safety-Kleen spokesman Buddy Judy. "Our trucks will be there to clean it up." Safety Kleen has 50 trucks positioned near the spill site, with more on standby. Judy said much of the crude oil seeping into the Gulf will eventually be used. Hawaiian Electric Company cited for hazardous waste violations at Waiau power plant
HECO has been cited for three counts of failure to make a hazardous waster determination and one count of storing hazardous waste without a permit. The state Department of Health says an inspection of the facility in 200 showed HECO had disposed of paint thinner, solvents and used oil on several occasions without making a hazardous waste determination. EPA complaint alleges Reed Skenandore violated the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by open dumping of solid waste, open buring of solid waste, failure to notify EPA of waste handling and to apply for an EPA identification number, failure to label containers of used oil and failure to respond to releases of oil to the environment.
